About MJ CORDOVEZ
 

Hi my name is Maria-Jose Cordovez, and I am the designer and owner of MJ Cordovez jewelry brand, located in Quito, Ecuador.  

My passion for jewelry making started early in my childhood, when often times I would make crafts using jewelry beads. Throughout high-school, people asked me what I wanted to do, and it was very clear to me that I wanted to be a jewelry designer.  However, my path to jewelry designing was a not straight-forward: Right after graduating from high-school, I was in an accident that left me in a Coma , with severe head injuries (sTBI) and right side of my body paralyzed).  Much to the surprise of those around me, including my doctors who didn’t expect me to survive, I got out of Coma and managed to recover pretty well due to lots of therapies I did for about 3 years, that at first were 24/7. It was during this time that my passion for jewelry making became alive again, as some of my first words months later when I could talk again were: “I want to do jewelry”. I did jewelry making as part of my recovery, not being aware of it, as it was a dream to accomplish before the accident happened, so I started attending classes at a Goldsmith Institute in Quito. This wasn’t an easy time for me and my family, who were often taking care of me and helping me as I couldn’t  walk, talk much or do a bunch of things that require neurological and cognitive functions to work properly.

I graduated as a Goldsmith from the institute Casa de America a long time ago and am now one of the registered goldsmiths in Ecuador. After achieving this, I went to the Universidad de los Hemisferios and graduated to be a licensed jewelry designer.

Recently another accomplishment happened as I graduated from my Master’s degree from Polimi and Istituto Marangni from the Global Master for Luxury Business Professionals.

To me, it’s not just about making a piece of jewelry but in each piece, I am trying to tell a story using artistic and sustainable products.  Each of my piece showcases the beauty of life, be it in metal, gemstone or other forms.
